the river's edge

Spring Lake

I am fortunate enough to live in a city that has extraordinary natural resources. Prehistoric evidence indicates early Native Americans lived along the San Marcos River's edge and enjoyed its clear, cool and abundant waters more than 14,000 years ago. These were some of the earliest peoples in North America.

The Springs and San Marcos River were discovered by a Spanish expedition on Saint Mark's Day in 1689 and given the name San Marcos. The village of Villa de San Marcos de Neve was the last town established by the Spanish crown in Texas. The village was built in 1807 where the Camino Real crossed the San Marcos River but it only lasted until 1812 as Spanish rule in Texas faded.
